Hi Wantigga, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Thanks! I’ve been good, enjoying life and making a lot of music. And you?
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Meditation”?
Yes sure. Meditation was the first track I produced for this record. It was one big experiment with sampling guitar slides, re-amping sounds and recording some live instruments. This is why the sound is so gritty and dynamic. I had a lot of fun working on this track.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
After my last record Pillow Talk (2016, Roche Musique) I was searching for my own sound, something new. I was looking at some Picasso one day and thought “why don’t make a beat like how a painter paints?”. So I started painting and it became the sound of this project. The theme is “(re)birth”.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
No, not yet.
The single comes off your new album Suddenly Everything – what’s the story behind the title?
Suddenly Everything is about moments of clarity. We all had mornings where you felt so hungover you decided never to drink again. Or you are broke and then you realize tomorrow is payday. These moments change the way you see things, mostly positive. It’s the shitty moments that make the good ones great and with this EP I pay respect to the struggles we go through so we learn how to celebrate life.
How was the recording and writing process?
The songs with Rachel West & Merryn Jeann were written during studio sessions in Amsterdam and Berlin. We’ve talked and found common ground to work with pretty quickly. I met Mischif online through a friend and colleague producer Koen. He sent me some tracks of this (until now) unknown rapper and I loved the vibe. On this song he sings only. The instrumental tracks I produced mostly in the comfort of my home. The project was mixed at Red Bull Music in Amsterdam and Delta Beats in Deventer.
What role does Amsterdam and Paris play in your role?
Amsterdam is my home base. Even though I live in Deventer (east Netherlands) I feel really at home in Amsterdam. My agency and event KLEAR is in Amsterdam and so are a lot of really dope producers I count among my friends. And Paris is like my second home lol. I’ve played a lot at Wonderlust, Nouveau Casino and loads of other clubs and it’s the home of my label Roche Musique. To me it’s an inspiring place with loads and loads of great music.
Known for blending different genres – how do you tend to balance them together?
I listen to a lot of different genres and can vibe to any beat as long it has a certain groove, it got to have soul. I was heavily influenced by hiphop growing up, even when I make a house beat, I think to myself “what would J Dilla do?”.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Haha I get most ideas for melodies while showering, sometimes I’m in the shower for 45 minutes just grooving lol. I used to write a lot of rap songs and hooks so I like to be involved with writing lyrics as well. But it’s also important to give another songwriter their space and creativity and take a step back in the writing process. For me vibe is everything and I could work with almost every artist who shares my weird humor.
Any plans to hit the road?
This week I’m heading over to Seoul and I’ll be doing shows in Barcelona, Amsterdam, Japan and Canada as well. I love to travel so this is an exciting time for me. I’m happy to be alive.
What else is happening next in Wantigga’s world?
I’m still producing a lot. Together with producers Sam Tiba, Canblaster, Jael, Jengi & The Flexican I’m working on a Japan inspired EP and I’m producing for other artists as well while working towards a new solo project.
